EAGLE TRAIL RANCH - Nye, Montana
Montana Seclusion with Rocky Mountain Views
Scenic Nye, Montana is home to Eagle Trail Ranch, an architect designed Mountain Retreat that takes full advantage of its rural surroundings while providing a relaxed high-end 4,100 sf interior.
Built at the edge of a sloping meadow facing Montana’s Rocky Mountains, you will be captivated by how the house compliments the 20-acre mountain setting and embraces the native landscape. The Custom Post-and-Beam House with three-levels, four bedrooms, and two baths was constructed utilizing local and re-claimed materials.
A Galvanized Metal Roof that turns the color of the sky in certain lights is one of many well-planned design elements. Silver gray Cedar Siding blends beautifully with a sage and evergreen forest backdrop. Log Timbers from Big Sky, Montana form the exposed post-and-beam frame.

The Great Room features a two-story vaulted ceiling with massive log posts and beams. Southern Yellow Pine Hardwood floors salvaged from a 100-year old Spiegel Warehouse in Chicago run through the main-level of the house. Both bathrooms feature Montana Travertine. Beadboard paneling and wainscoting throughout the home was milled in Bozeman, Montana. Inside and out, indigenous colors tie the house to its site.
This four-bedroom, two-bath, 4,100 square foot home is designed to provide a peaceful and rejuvenating respite. The mountain ambiance is brought inside with engaging views and exposed log timbers, which give this retreat a deep affinity for its place. An Antique Bar from Mexico that serves as an island between the Kitchen and Dining area provided inspiration for the interior design.
On the main-level of the house are the Great Room (with foyer, living room and dining room areas), Kitchen, Master Bedroom, 2nd Bedroom, Full Bathroom, Front Entry Deck and Screened Deck.
The 3rd Bedroom Bunkroom, Office Nook and Den-Sitting Room with oversized Storage Closet is in the upper loft-level.
The lower level of the home has the Family Room, 4th Bedroom, 2nd Bathroom, Laundry Room, Mechanical Closet, large unfinished Basement Room and Mudroom Foyer that opens onto an outside under-deck Patio.
CUSTOM IRON CHANDELIERS by “Rusty” adorn the high vaulted ceiling of the Great Room.
Each work of iron art represents a different western scene. The dining room fixture represents a “wild west hoedown” while the living room fixture depicts a “stagecoach journey”.
The kitchen is convenient and comfortable with stainless appliances featuring a Thermador Gas Range, custom Cabinetry, Beadboard Paneling and exposed Log Beams.
The four bedrooms sleep 14-people in conventional beds: eight (8) in the bunkroom and two (2) each in the other three bedrooms. If additional guests visit, they can be readily accommodated on convertible and futon sofas.
The main-level Great Room, lower-level Family Room, and loft Den-Sitting Room provide diverse living space for extended family and houseguests.
Design of the Custom Iron Hardware throughout the home was a collaborative effort between architect and blacksmith inspired by the Old Faithful Snow Lodge in Yellowstone National Park (a project they both worked on).
Radiant in-floor Heat provides comfortable and efficient heating. DSL is available at the property and the house is pre-wired with CAT-5 Wiring.
While the house is amazing, the MAGNIFICENT SURROUNDINGS are truly BREATHTAKING.
This 20-acre property is “Off the Beaten Path” on a private community road. The property consists of two contiguous 10-acre tracts of land that border a large private ranch. The house is on the northern tract overlooking the southern tract. Additional structures can be built on the property and a concrete foundation is already in place for a detached garage. The two tracts compliment each other, but could be sold separately by a future owner.
The development has private access to two desirable recreational areas: Custer National Forest and the Stillwater River. A private 10-acre park sits on the banks of the Stillwater River about two miles from the property. A mile from the property is a private trail into Custer National Forest. The closest public access to this area of the forest is over six miles away. The Stillwater is renowned for excellent fly-fishing and rafting opportunities.
2010 AIA Design Award winning Architect, Dennis Deppmeier of A & E Architects in Billings, Montana, designed this house. A & E brought their experience with Yellowstone National Park to this project with influences from the Lake Yellowstone Hotel renovation, Old Faithful Inn restoration along with the design of the newly constructed Old Faithful Snow Lodge. Their design aesthetic incorporates the "rustic" style of architecture of the historic park buildings but also reflects a modern structure in the use of materials and detailing.
“The building is an "accessory" to nature employing native materials that blend best with the environment”.
LOCATION: Eagle Trail Ranch is located in the Rocky Mountain foothills of South Central Montana 75 miles southwest of Billings, between the towns of Columbus and Red Lodge. This 20-acre Mountain Retreat is just north of the Beartooth Mountain Range near the town of Nye in southern Stillwater County. Columbus, 35 miles northeast, is the county seat. Billings, Montana’s largest city, is 40 miles east of Columbus via I-90.
ELEVATION AND CLIMATE: The ranch’s proximity to the Beartooth Front affords it a fairly predictable Chinook area. Consequently, the winters can be quite pleasant, although occasionally very low temperatures and significant snowfalls occur. Elevations on the property average 5,800 feet.
AIRPORT: Billings’ Logan International Airport, 75 miles to the northeast, provides major carrier and regional airline service. Columbus, 35 miles northeast of the ranch, has a regional airport with a recently upgraded 3,800’ x 75’ paved runway and private hangers.
WILDLIFE: Wildlife on the ranch and in the area is abundant including elk, moose, big horn sheep, mountain goat, whitetail deer, mule deer, black bear, grizzly bear, mountain lion, gray wolf, turkey, grouse and sand hill crane along with other various upland game birds. Spring is a magical time when it is common to see newborn elk calves, deer fawns or bear cubs. Wild native trout abound in local streams and rivers.
LOCALE: Eagle Trail Ranch has private access into Custer National Forest. The Custer adjoins Gallatin National Forest and together encompasses the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness area. This is the largest contiguous designated wilderness area in the lower 48. The 900,000 acres contained in the Custer and Gallatin national forests are contiguous to two (2) million acres that comprise Yellowstone and Teton National Parks. At one time, the Crow Indian Reservation was located in this lush mountain valley. In the late 1800’s, the reservation relocated to the southeast and this land opened for homesteading.
Cattle ranching continues to be a staple of the rural economy. Many ranches remain with families of the original homesteaders. The community is a pleasant blend of agriculture and recreation.
RECREATION and CULTURE: Recreational opportunities in the immediate area include over 17 blue ribbon trout fishing waters along with hiking, horseback riding, hunting, cross country skiing and wildlife viewing. Montana’s waters hold 56 species of native fish.
Red Lodge, Montana is a scenic alpine town, with first class downhill skiing, fine dining, boutique shopping and is located just 50 miles away from the Ranch. It hosts the Home of Champions Rodeo every July, which is a fun time for the entire family. Nearby, Bearcreek Saloon has nightly “Pig Races” on summer weekends – bring your camera. Just a short drive from the Ranch, Red Lodge is a great place to spend a few hours with friends or begin a day drive on the Beartooth Scenic Bi-way or Chief Joseph pass
Yellowstone Parkis truly a wonder to behold from the amazing thermal features to tremendous wildlife viewing and beautiful scenery. The Beartooth Scenic Bi-way goes from Red Lodge to the park’s northeast entrance. The late Charles Kuralt of CBS described this scenic roadway as “one of the most beautiful drives in America”.
Cody, Wyoming is just 60 miles from Red Lodge. It is a fun Cowboy Town that exudes everything western. The Buffalo Bill Historical Center in Cody is an internationally recognized historical center with five (5) museums and 300,000 square feet. This world-class museum complex grew from $5,000 in 1917 to $50 million plus in assets today. Yellowstone Park’s east entrance is just an hour from Cody.
Billings, Montanais “Montana’s Trailhead” where the plains meet the mountains. Just an hour from the ranch, it is the state’s largest city. It offers an international airport, shopping, fine dining, theater and the arts along with the most advanced healthcare services in a four-state area. Billings is a regional hub of commerce for an area that spans in excess of 125,000 square miles and is home to Montana State University Billings, Rocky Mountain College and University of Mary. The city’s proximity is close enough for convenience, but far enough to not be a daily distraction.
